Often, medical technologists associate politics with being manipulative in order to get ahead. Because of this belief, medical technologists sometimes want to stay as far away from politics as possible. But, this can lead to medical technologists being overlooked for advancement opportunities. It is best to have the best of both worlds as a medical technologist, which means being involved with politics while holding onto integrity.

One easy way to be involved in politics as a medical technologist is to help those in the lab with influence to accomplish their goals and the laboratories goals, so long as the goals are moral. This way, you will be recognized as valuable and will get more opportunities to advance because a person with influence in office politics sees you as valuable.

Office politics are all about learning how to influence people effectively and make advantageous relationships with those who can influence people to your benefit. There are ways that medical technologists can do this without being selfish.

Rhode Island living can appeal to many medical technologists because it is easy to run into people you know since the state is so small. This makes it feel almost like small town living, which some medical technologists love. Medical technologists also like living in Rhode Island because there are so many recreational outdoors activities available to partake in within a short distance. A medical technologist can visit the beach, ski, bike, sail, fish, or boat without having to drive very far. Rhode Island has many small quaint villages near the coast that medical technologists can visit easily or even plan weekend vacations to visit without having to drive a far distance.

There are also a lot of art attractions and shopping available to medical technologists. A medical technologist will find competitive pay in Rhode Island and a good amount of job opportunities.

Medical technologists may also enjoy living in Connecticut because there are many job opportunities available as well as many medical technologist programs available to those interested in becoming a medical technologist. Connecticut offers many outdoors activities to a medical technologist such as hiking, skiing, fishing or horse back riding. Medical technologists can find many unique places to shop in Connecticut. Medical technologists will also be able to see quality theater in Connecticut.

Vermont offers the classic maple syrup and skiing to medical technologists. The Adirondacks, the green mountains, and Lake Champlain are all close by so medical technologists can take their pick of fishing, boating, skiing, scuba diving, snowmobiling, climbing, hiking or camping. Vermont also has stunning fall colors that medical technologists can see each year.

Medical technologists will also love that Vermont has many medical technologist job opportunities. There are many hospital laboratories that vary in size that are full of job opportunities for a medical technologist. Because there are small and large labs there are different typed of medical technologist job opportunities. A medical technologist can work at a smaller lab if a job as a generalist is desired. However, if specializing is what a medical technologist desires, a large lab offers many niche opportunities.

Massachusetts is an ideal place for medical technologists who are history buffs to live because they can be close to Plymouth Rock and Harvard University. Another huge plus about living in Massachusetts that medical technologists love to take advantage of is living close to the ocean. Medical technologists can get to the ocean fairly quickly from almost anywhere in the state. Weekend trips are easy for medical technologists to plan when the live in Massachusetts, since there are many seaside towns within easy driving distance.  Massachusetts also offers cultural diversity of medical technologists.

Maine is very nature oriented which many medical technologists appreciate. Main’s nickname is the Pine Tree State and it is a well given nickname because a medical technologist will see lots of trees and mountains in Maine. There are many things that medical technologists who are nature enthusiasts can do outdoors in Maine.

Maine also has many historical sites that medical technologists can visit, including old forts and cemeteries as well as the Maine Martime Museum. There are many areas in Mainewhere a medical technologist can live that have small town atmospheres because they don’t have much bad traffic. There are many medical technologists who actually work full time in one hospital and per diem in others because there is a high demand for medical technologists in Maine.

New Hampshire also has a good amount of outdoors activities to offer a medical technologist. Manchester for example is only one hour away from the mountains where skiing, snowboarding, and hiking can be done by medical technologists. The ocean is nearby too for plenty of other recreational activities for medical technologists.

Most medical technologists said the reasons they stay in their profession are that they are interested in their work, they have job security, they feel challenged at work, and they have good medical benefits. Medical technologists said they feel that their work is important. Medical technologists also say their work is different each day. Medical technologists also have a lot of independence at work which they enjoy.

When these medical technologists were asked what could keep them in the field long term they said it would help if they had salaries equivalent to nursing salaries. Medical technologists said it would also help if individuals were recognized by those outside of the laboratory. The recognition that medical technologists seek is more from physicians, nurses, and administrators than from patients or the public.

Medical technologists could help to improve their field by working to increase recognition of the value of their work. If medical technologists were able to gain recognition from hospital administrators, the administrators might work harder to increase medical technologists’ salaries. This could help to solve both main problems that medical technologists have with their field.

Learn about finding a job as a medical technologist.

A medical technologist spends a lot of time standing and often sitting in workstations that aren’t equipped with chairs and desks that are comfortable for each employee. Often in laboratories a medical technologist will share a workstation with several other employees. These workstations do not always have chairs that are adjustable in height, and rarely are the desks adjustable in height. This means that some medical technologists end up straining and sitting in awkward positions for long periods of time. This can lead the medical technologist to become fatigued or sore.

When polled by Workrite Ergonomics almost 90 percent of employees said they were tense or fatigued by the time their work day was over. Also, a little more than 92 percent of employees said they would like their desk or chair to be adjusted in height. A single workers’ compensation claim could cost as much as $50,000, so it makes sense for employers to take these complaints seriously.

Employers can provide height adjustable chairs and desks to avoid medical technologists being uncomfortable. Employers can also get LCD computer screens that are adjustable in height, as well as movable keyboards. Lighting improvement may be needed if paperwork is done by medical technologists in workstations.

Employers can also train medical technologists to recognize fatigue early on in order to avoid an injury that might not have happened had the medical technologist taken a break. Medical technologists can learn to look away from computer screens just for a few moments every fifteen minutes to help keep eye muscles from tiring out.  Medical technologists can learn to take two minute stretch breaks every half hour or hour, even employing special stretching techniques depending on which position the employee has been sitting in.

These are simple ways that the workplace can be improved for medical technologists that can benefit employers in the long run.
